Welcome back to the AARP's Create the Good DIY monthly features. Believe it or not it's back to school time and therefore, September's topic is how to hold a school supply drive, used book sale and teaching your child financial literacy. School supplies are an important part of enjoying the education process and most schools have a limited supply of the basic educational tools. These steps are an easy way to execute the drive or book sale and become an important factor in your child's learning. Financial literacy should be taught at a young age for success later in life. As a parent, you are the key component in making this happen. Please check back each month to learn more about the issues that affect your everyday lives and help make your life more productive.

HOW TO HOLD A SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

A school supply drive is an easy way to have a profound impact on students and their learning experience. Make school a better place for students and teachers by simply proving school supplies. Many families are struggling to make ends meet and are unable to provide the basic school supplies for their children. The solution is to collect supplies for schools by organizing your own supply drive. During your weekly visit to the store pick up a few items and inform your friends to do the same. By accomplishing this task, you will help teachers by providing them with proper tools for their classrooms so they don't have to spend from their own pockets and aiding in your child's learning

HOW TO HOLD A USED BOOK SALE

Local community organizations and libraries can benefit from a used book sale. By organizing a used book sale, proceeds from the sale can support a community need and provide affordable literature for readers of all ages. Libraries are always looking for more books to add to their collection. The benefits from holding a used book sale are many...raise funds to support community programs, promote reading in an affordable way, encourage community volunteerism and involvement and re-circulate materials in environmentally responsible way. Book sales promote the love of reading and learning.

HELP A CHILD LEARN FINANCIAL LITERACY

LMany high school students do not know the basics of budgeting, saving and planning for their financial future, but are the holder of credit cards. With your experience and perspective, you make the perfect teacher. Junior Achievement offers an easy step-by-step financial literacy program that you can share with your children. Teaching children financial literacy is a rewarding experience by giving a child a head start with their financial future and the importance of handling money.
